It is Tuesday, the day, some 30 hours before the expiration of the ultimatum for Sadam Hussein. I ma taking a break form writing I am doing for a book I am working on, about communal spiritual formation, which seems a little trivial right now.
During my brake I turned on the TV to see if Sadam had by chance left power- my prayer at this point. So I put on C- Span where there is live coverage of a US House preceding. The opened with a prayer from the Chaplin and then the reciting of the pledge of allegiance. It creeps me out to have prayer and the pledge of civil religion in the same breath by our government. What ever happened to the separation of Church and State - the church could use it at this time.

By the way, it seems to me that military action to remove Sadam is the best track to free the millions of people who have been suffering under sanctions and brutality for 12 years. It sure is hard to be people of peace when at the same time so many people want to see their political agenda's bolstered. I hear so many people wanting peace, but what they seem to want is for the US to not have to enter into the warish hell of the Kurds, Shiites or Iraqi dissidents.
To quote a line from a song that Javier wrote that we sing fairly often at SP called Madmen to the Sane, "how can there be peace for all, when all I want it peace for me?"

Jesus, make an instrument of peace for all - even those who have different political agenda than me.

So I just looked up a the TV, and in the US House chamber people are giving one minute speeches on the war, but there are like 12 people in the entire place. There are a bunch of people giving their opinions to virtually no one. Classic.
One of the speakers is talking about punishment by execution by stoning in Iraq and Africa. He is arguing that stoning is a cruel violation of human rights. What a shitty world we live in. it turns out that it is an initiative brought by a member from Minnesota.

Jesus, make an instrument of peace for all - even those who have different political agenda than me and even if it means personal sacrifice.
